The Intersection between Heatwaves, High-Rise Living and the Aged: A Narrative Review of the Literature

High-density living and heatwaves are increasing, at the same time as population is ageing. The aim of this literature review was to examine intersection between older and/or vulnerable people, who live in high-density/high-rise situations, their health during heatwaves. Using electronic databases, examined. Articles were included if they were: (1) published English, (2) examined relationship building, health, extreme heat, (3) or populations. A total 241 articles identified which 15 duplicates 209 did not meet inclusion criteria. Of 17 studies review, 4 conducted following Chicago Europe. These a age, vulnerability, floor residence, people died because heatwave. High-rise increasing globally, residents getting older. This, combination with increased heatwave intensity frequency, highlights risk morbidity mortality group, particularly where there no access air-conditioning power grid overload heat. This research benefits high-rise buildings, professionals care for them, architects, urban planners, policy makers.
